Chavis Jones

Chavis Jones serves as Counsel at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is a national civil rights legal organization, founded by John F. Kennedy at the White House in the consequential summer of 1963. Mr. Jones is an advocate for the advancement of civil and human rights across a broad range of issues. At the Lawyers’ Committee, he has been a part of litigation and policy work related to both K-12 schools and higher education issues including student debt, bans on Black history, HBCUs, algorithmic discrimination, and the predatory practices of some for-profit colleges and universities. In addition to his legal work, he proudly teaches a course on “Civil Rights Litigation” at Howard University School of Law.

Mr. Jones is a proud graduate of Morehouse College with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He then graduated from Harvard Divinity School, where he focused on the intersection of religion, politics, and ethics. Lastly, he graduated from Duke University School of Law, where he focused primarily on civil and human rights issues.

Mr. Jones serves on several boards including the Multifaith Initiative to End Mass Incarceration, the Black Alumni Collective (a national organization of Black alumni from universities across America), and currently serves as co-chair of the Duke Black Alumni Association. Additionally, he served as a staff writer for the Human Rights Policy Journal at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government, his writing on voter suppression was published in several Black newspapers, and he recently co-authored a piece entitled “Overturning SFFA v. Harvard” with David Hinojosa who argued the civil rights aspects of the case before the Supreme Court.
