Destiny Planter

Destiny Planter, Esq. is a talented litigator with a demonstrated ability to connect with clients from all walks of life. After honing her legal skills while gaining invaluable courtroom experience as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Ebony M. Scott, Destiny started working as a civil rights attorney at Peoples’ Counsel. In this role, Destiny represents survivors of police violence in federal courts, bringing cases against officers accused of excessive force.

Destiny has always been a self-starter. After graduating with a degree in Political Science and English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Destiny utilized the Frances Phillips Fellowship to study child welfare in Kenya and Ghana. Destiny then joined AmeriCorps to serve as a college adviser to underrepresented students. After two years of public service, Destiny made the intentional decision to forgo the remaining portion of her Gates Millennium Scholarship—which would have fully funded a Ph.D. at the university of her choice—in order to pursue a career in law.

Destiny received a full-tuition scholarship to UNC School of Law. As a Chancellors Scholar, Destiny served as the President of the Black Law Students Association and as a Staff Member on the International Law Journal. Her UNC Law experience pinnacled when she became a student attorney in the country’s first Critical Race Lawyering Civil Rights Clinic. Although she began her career as a Privacy Associate at ArentFox, Destiny’s sharp litigation skills led to her appointment as an Adjunct Professor in the Critical Race Lawyering Civil Rights Clinic just two years after serving as a student attorney. In this role, she successfully defended a Black woman sued for defamation following events that occurred at a peaceful “Justice for George Floyd” march, securing a favorable verdict in a jury trial.

Destiny is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Outside of work, Destiny enjoys traveling and serving at Union Church.
